Located in the quaint town of Kankhal, just 4 km from Haridwar, the Daksha Mahadev Temple is a revered pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple holds immense significance in Hindu mythology and attracts devotees and tourists throughout the year.
The temple is rooted in a powerful tale from the Shiv Purana. King Daksha Prajapati, father of Goddess Sati, performed a grand yajna (fire ritual) but excluded Lord Shiva, his son-in-law, from the ceremony. When Sati attended the yajna despite Lord Shiva’s warnings, she was deeply insulted by her father and, in her grief and anger, immolated herself in the yajna fire.
Hearing the tragic news, Lord Shiva sent his warrior, Veerbhadra, who destroyed the yajna and severed Daksha’s head. Later, Lord Shiva restored King Daksha to life by placing a goat's head on his body. The site of this monumental event is where the Daksha Mahadev Temple stands today.
The present structure was built in 1810 by Queen Dhankaur and renovated in 1962 by the Mahanirvan Akhara. The temple walls depict vivid stories from Hindu mythology, bringing its rich history to life.
The temple is one of the five sacred sites in Haridwar, symbolizing the union of divine energies. Devotees flock here, especially during the holy month of Sawan (August) and Shivratri, seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings.
