Located on Neel Parvat in Haridwar, the Chandi Devi Temple is one of the most ancient and revered temples in northern India. This holy shrine attracts thousands of devotees and tourists throughout the year. A modern ropeway service, operated by Udan Khatola, makes reaching the temple quick and convenient, turning the uphill journey into an exciting experience.
While trekking to the temple takes over an hour, the ropeway ride covers the distance in just five minutes. Operational since 1997, this state-of-the-art facility offers breathtaking views of Haridwar, the Ganges, and the surrounding forests. The ropeway starts from Nazibabad Road and directly takes you to the temple atop Neel Parvat.
The Chandi Devi Temple, also known as Neel Parvat Teerth, was constructed by King Suchat Singh in 1929. However, the idol of Goddess Chandi was established much earlier in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya, one of Hinduism’s greatest spiritual leaders. The temple is considered a Siddh Peetha, where the goddess is believed to fulfill the wishes of her devotees.
The legend says that Goddess Chandika emerged from Parvati to defeat demon kings Shumbha and Nishumbha, who had taken over the heavens. After her victory, the goddess rested at Neel Parvat, and the temple was built to honor this divine event. The nearby peaks are named after the defeated demons Shumbha and Nishumbha.
The temple offers facilities like food stalls, resting areas, and drinking water for the convenience of pilgrims. Leather items, non-vegetarian food, and alcoholic drinks are strictly prohibited.
