Located 5.5 km from the Badrinath Bus Stand and nestled on the banks of the Saraswati River in Mana Village, Vyas Cave, or Vyas Gufa, is a revered ancient cave in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Mana, the last Indian village near the Indo-China border, is home to this site steeped in mythology and history.
Vyas Gufa is believed to be the site where Sage Vyas composed the Mahabharata with the assistance of Lord Ganesha. In addition to this epic, Vyas is credited with authoring the 18 Puranas, Brahma Sutras, and the four Vedas. Inside the cave, a statue of Maharishi Vyas is worshipped by pilgrims.
One unique feature of the cave is its natural roof, which resembles pages from ancient scriptures, symbolizing Vyas' monumental contribution to Hindu literature.
According to legend, Sage Vyas sought Lord Ganesha’s help in transcribing the Mahabharata. Ganesha agreed, but on one condition: Vyas must not stop dictating. During the process, Ganesha’s reed pen broke. To continue uninterrupted, Ganesha broke off a part of his own tusk to use as a pen. This story explains the broken tusk often depicted in Ganesha’s imagery.
The ideal months to visit Vyas Cave are May, June, September, and October. The region is inaccessible during the winter months due to heavy snowfall.
