Tungnath, situated at an altitude of 12,100 ft, is the highest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the five sacred Panch Kedar temples in Uttarakhand. Surrounded by lush meadows and majestic Himalayan peaks, the trek to Tungnath starts from Chopta, also known as the "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand."
According to legend, the Pandavas built the Tungnath Temple to atone for their sins after the Mahabharata war. Lord Shiva, in the form of a bull, is believed to have reappeared here, where his hands (bahu) were discovered. The temple, said to be over 1,000 years old, was discovered by Adi Shankaracharya and remains a revered pilgrimage site.
Apart from its spiritual significance, Tungnath offers trekkers a chance to explore scenic landscapes, vibrant flora, and rare wildlife in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Its artistic architecture and serene atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for both pilgrims and nature enthusiasts.
