Perched high in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Gartang Gali is a historic and adventurous trek that reopened in 2021 after remaining closed for 59 years. Nestled in the breathtaking Nelong Valley near the Indo-China border, this 150-year-old wooden bridge is not just a marvel of architecture but also a gateway to the rich history of Indo-Tibetan trade.
Gartang Gali is a 136-meter-long wooden staircase built by Peshawari Pathans who carved it out of a vertical rock face. Once a vital trade route for merchants and nomads, the bridge was abandoned after the 1962 Indo-China war. Painstakingly restored, it now stands at an altitude of 3,352 meters (11,000 feet), offering adventure seekers an unmatched experience of walking on a historic path surrounded by scenic beauty.
The wooden bridge of Gartang Gali was once used by merchants ferrying goods between India and Tibet, often with the help of yaks. The Peshawari Pathans, skilled artisans, built this masterpiece by cutting through granite on a sheer cliff face. The bridge fell into disrepair after the Indo-China war but has now been carefully reconstructed, preserving its historic charm.
Reaching Gartang Gali involves a 2.5-kilometer trek through dense forests. The climb is challenging but rewarding, offering panoramic views of the Nelong Valley and the Jadh Ganga River far below. Walking on the wooden staircase, perched precariously on a rocky ledge, is an exhilarating experience that tests the nerves of even seasoned trekkers.
Legend has it that Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, famous for his book Seven Years in Tibet, crossed Gartang Gali while escaping to Tibet during World War II. His remarkable journey later inspired the Hollywood movie starring Brad Pitt.
Gartang Gali and Nelong Valley are accessible from April 15 to November 15, when the weather is pleasant, and the route is clear for trekking.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, approximately 200 km from Uttarkashi. Taxis and buses are available from the airport to reach Uttarkashi, from where Gartang Gali is about 110 km.
The closest railheads are Rishikesh and Dehradun, both about 200 km from Uttarkashi. From the stations, you can hire taxis or take state-run buses.
Uttarkashi is well-connected by road to major cities like Rishikesh and Dehradun. State transport buses run regularly, and taxis are also available. From Uttarkashi, you can drive to the starting point of the trek in Nelong Valley.
