Legends and History Behind the Mahasu Devta Temple

It is said that in ancient times a demon named Kirmik used to live in this place, who used to trouble the people of the nearby villages a lot. And used to eat the animals of the villagers and the villagers themselves.

So, being sad, a person named Hanubhat, who was a Brahmin, worshipped and did penance of Lord Shiva and Mata Shakti. After many days of meditation, Lord Shiva and Mother Shakti were pleased and gave him four brothers. Who were the form of Shiva himself. These four brothers were Botha Mahasu, Basik, Pabasik and Chalda. They defeated the demon named Kirmik in the war and saved the villagers from his atrocities.

After this, the villagers started worshiping the Mahasu brothers. And in the present time, Mahasu Devta is worshiped as the main deity of Jaunsar Bawar. He is considered the god of justice here. And his decision is universally accepted by the local people.

Peoples from Uttarakhand and Himachal come here to worship Mahasu devta and peoples also make promise here that if their wishes are completed then they will come and pray at temple and visit the festival and see the lord. 

Mahasu Devta Fair and Festival

Mahasu Devta fair held in August month every year, which is three, four days ceremony when peoples from Jaunsari tribe celebrate the festival here and other peoples from outside also join them for the spiritual festival.

This fair depicts the cultural harmony between the communities.

There is deity inside the temple one of the four Mahasu Brother, named Chalda Mahasu, during the fair the deity is taken out in the possession and large crowd walk on both sides. If you have every visited the Pahad or Hills you must have seen the Mata or Devi and Lords are taken outside in a Doli and then peoples walk both side and the deity was kept on the doli, which is held by peoples on the shoulders.

So, same happens here and the prayers are continued for three days and nights, where many peoples came to visit and take blessing of Mahasu Devta. They are also accompanied by music and folk dance, performed by local peoples from nearby villages. Also, many artists of Music and folk dances come to perform here from Dehradun.

Architecture Aspects of Mahasu Devta Temple Hanol

The temple is one of the rarest examples of amazing architecture which made with blend of stone and wooden structure. The sanctum is a pure stone sikhara in classical Nagar Style.

The entire wooden structure in this temple is connected to a high hallway roof over which is a two-tiered curved chhatri, on which stands a beautiful slender shikhara. The roof corners and balcony projections are decorated with fringes and bells which hang and sway with the slightest breeze, giving a unique experience.

How to reach Hanol? 

By Car: - To reach one can directly drive from Dehradun via Tyuni Mori Road which is about 160 Kms and takes about 4-5 Hours to reach. You will see the tons river is flowing side by the road and the valley itself make an amazing experience where you can see the trees, greenery everywhere.

By Air: - Dehradun is well connected with Air, and you can reach Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun, from where you can take Bus or Taxi to reach Hanol.

By Train: Dehradun is also connected with Rail and one can easily book a ticket of trains from different cities of India to Dehradun, the rail Code is DEH for Dehradun. From here you can take Buses or taxi to reach Hanol.
